Membro da selecção alemã que participou nos Mundiais de 1986, 1990 e 1994, Olaf Thon somou 52 internacionalizações na sua carreira, venceu o Mundial de 1990, foi campeão nacional da Alemanha em 1989, 1990 e 1994 (sempre pelo Bayern) e venceu a Taça da Alemanha em 2001 e 2002 (com o Schalke 04). Deu recentemente uma entrevista à página da FIFA, e foi a partir daí que cheguei a este jogo, considerado um dos melhores de sempre do futebol alemão.
Empate a quatro golos no final do tempo regulamentar, a seis no final do prolongamento, com o 12º golo a ser marcado por Thon, aos 120'. Acabado de fazer 18 anos, e de fazer um hat-trick contra o Bayern, foi imediatamente transformado em estrela. Deixo o único vídeo que encontrei do jogo, apenas com o último golo, já que um outro (em três partes), presumivelmente com todos os golos, foi retirado; e também uma espécie de entrevista, logo após o final do encontro, com um Olaf Thon no meio dos adeptos, e da polícia. O Bayern acabou por chegar à final (depois de vencer o jogo de desempate, em Munique, por 3-2) e venceu a Taça, frente ao Borussia Mönchengladbach, nos penáltis (7-6), com o primeiro do Borussia a ser falhado por Lothar Matthäus, que nessa altura já tinha contrato assinado com o Bayern Munique. «Schalke was a Second Division team with some hope, but Bayern were everything in the 80s. Schalke's keeper Walter Junghans was a European Cup finalist in 1981 with Bayern, but now they had sent him away to Schalke. And Schalke played with a young 18-year old from Gelsenkirchen-Horst in attack: Olaf Thon.
Legend would have it that it was Olaf's first game for Schalke, but that's not true.
This match, acclaimed as the greatest ever played in the Parkstadion, was not on live television because the DFB's deal with German TV called for one live game (that was Gladbach-Werder on ARD) and one tape delayed one-hour report. That was Schalke-Bayern on ZDF, and usually reserved Eberhard Figgemeier opened the broadcast by inviting the viewers to remain in front of their TVs, they would be happy they did.

After Schalke made it 3-3: „And who's there to put it away? Olaf Thon! ... Schalke equalizes. As far as I'm concerned, we have a sensation on our hands!"
After Walter Junghans slid to the ground, held on to the ball, and then watched as Dieter Hoeneß tapped it out of his grasp and stuffed it in the net to make it 5-4 Bayern: "Mistake! A mistake by Walter Junghans, and that decides the game. This just can't be happening, ladies and gentlemen."
Then, 5-5: "Bernhard Dietz...AND THE BALL'S IN THE NET! BERN-HARD-DIETZ AND THE BALL'S IN THE NET!"
6-5: "Dieter Hoeneß has waited long enough...is that the decision? It has to be, ladies and gentlemen!"
And finally, 6-6: „Wolf-Günther Wiesel corrects the wall, nine meters fifteen from the ball. Thon runs up-and Dierßen shoots. Clute-Simon! And Thoooon! That is not possible („Das gibt es nicht!"), ladies and gentlemen, that – is – not – possible! I've never seen a game like this!"
After the game, a summary and a famous malapropism: "An unbelievable game. You can't imagine soccer being any more beautiful."..."There is no way to make up for all the great advertising the game of soccer received today."
