«Blatter to step up Euro quota bid
Fifa president Sepp Blatter has told the BBC he is ready to challenge the European Union to get a quota on foreign players within European teams.
Blatter made his comments in response to an NOP poll of football fans for BBC1's Football Focus. He wants clubs to be limited to five foreigners in their starting XI to allow homegrown talent to flourish. (...). The 71-year-old Swiss argues that football deserves special treatment because it is not like any other job. "Workers in Europe can circulate freely but footballers are not workers," he said. "You cannot consider a footballer like any normal worker because you need 11 to play a match - and they are more artists than workers."

«Spain grants African players EU status
African players in the Primera Divisíon will no longer be regarded as non-European Union nationals after a change in regulations was ratified by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).The RFEF gave the go-ahead after consulting with FIFA and UEFA following inquiries by Real Madrid CF and Getafe CF as to whether their African players could be treated as European Union workers in accordance with an agreement signed in 2000. The Cotonu accord was signed in Benin by the EU and the 77 members of the Association of African, Caribbean and Pacific states in 2000. The agreement was sanctioned by the Spanish parliament in April last year, who agreed to treat workers from those nations as EU citizens.»
